This role is offered as a full-time position on a salary of £40,000 per annum. You will work a flexible five day week. This is a Fixed Term contract for 18 months, with the possibility of extension. The probationary period is three months.

Job Description: 

This new role brings together a vital overview of the Technical needs of the theatre. You will oversee long-term planning around the fabric and assets of the building, as well as the technical expertise to support the Production Team in delivering our busy programme of productions and projects. In the next 18 months, this role will take forward the strategy, tactics and costings for a capital programme of work to the point of fundraising campaign for feasibility or capital work. You’ll be a key member of the Senior Management Team, based in central London, and you’ll feed into the strategy, operations and legacy planning of one of the UK’s busiest producing theatres. We are looking for a highly motivated Technical Director with demonstrable experience of theatre buildings, maintenance budgeting, capital work and project management. You will enjoy managing a team, seeing projects through to completion and ensuring that information is communicated effectively. You will be highly organised and self-motivated, and able to demonstrate a track record in robust budget management and strategic planning.


The Technical Director has three key areas of responsibility:

  1. Building & Capital Plans Supports the development of a building & resources’ strategy with a view to long term capital work;
  2. Building & Technical Maintenance (Ongoing) Oversees the building and its ongoing maintenance needs with the Building Maintenance Manager and external contractors;
  3. Productions & Projects Supports the Artistic Director and Head of Production in realising technical elements for the presentation of productions to the highest artistic standard, and line manages the Technical Team to deliver them.


Key responsibilities: Long-Term Building & Capital Plans

  • To identify the theatre’s capital requirements in light of safety-critical requirements to make the theatre a building achieving best practice in terms of artist support, audience experience, Access, sustainability, and value for money. Work towards feasibility for a capital campaign. 
  • To work with Trustees, Senior Management and external advisors to research, identify and assess service providers, project managers and contractors, seek rigorous costings and workable budgets, and structure a multi-year replacement programme to the point at which a fundraising programme can be developed.
  • To provide knowledge, research and advice on all practical areas of the building’s current and potential operations to serve and enhance the business model and legacy.  


Key Responsibilities: Building & Technical Maintenance (Ongoing)

  • Working with the Building Maintenance Manager, to devise, budget and schedule all maintenance work.  To oversee and supervise the general maintenance programme, ensuring that all building systems and contracts are fully up to date and offer value for money and are risk-assessed, and that running repairs are noted and attended to.  To maintain a full overview of all building and theatre technical equipment, ensuring the company is legislatively compliant, and maintaining the general appearance and upkeep of the building. To manage the Health & Safety for all backstage areas and report as required on such matters including the maintenance, certification and management of all technical items as required under H&S legislation.
  • To support the Technical Team in ensuring all productions and projects comply with legislation, are certificated as required, have faultless risk assessment and method statement documentation, and have been inspected by the relevant authorities, as necessary.  To ensure that proper and complete records are maintained, and to advise on changes in legislation, to ensure that productions comply with H&S policy, to advise and instruct on safe procedures, and identify training needs. 
  • To support the General Manager around utilities’ contracts, ensuring value for money, efficiency and safety.


Key responsibilities: Productions & Projects

  • To support the Artistic, Technical and Producing function in realising productions, events and projects to the highest standard, ensuring they are competently staffed, safely operated, in budget, and on schedule.  To advise the Head of Production and manage the Technical Manager where technical expertise or additional skills are required. 
  • With the Executive Director and the team, to manage the Technical and Maintenance budgets, providing regular accounts and reports, ensuring budgets are kept strictly within limit, and adhering to the company’s Financial Regulations and procedures.



We are one of the busiest producing theatres in the UK, and with an 11 year old building has substantial plans for capital works. We are looking for a highly motivated Technical Director with a wide-ranging experience of building maintenance and development to the highest standards. You will enjoy working collaboratively, seeing projects through to completion, and ensuring that information is communicated effectively.  You will be highly organised, and able to demonstrate a track record in project management, sound planning, and robust budget management. 


Essential skills:

  • A demonstrable understanding of theatre buildings and capital replacement, including building maintenance, project costing, planning and management.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience of current stage and rigging techniques. 
  • Experience of budgeting and effective management of budgets.
  • Interest or experience in improving theatre and building environmental controls.
  • Working knowledge of business continuity planning.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and deliver on schedule.
  • Excellent CAD and Microsoft Office skills.
  • Training and experience of Health and Safety leadership.
  • An understanding of, or interest in, theatre and the organisation’s aims.
  • A commitment to diversity and equality of opportunity. 


Desirable skills:

  • International touring experience in a producing or receiving organisation.
  • AV, Lighting, Sound, Set Design and project management training or experience.
  • First Aid certification.
  • Understanding of Theatre Licensing requirements.
  • Interest in working with young people.
