Reports to: Head of Impact Evaluation

Location: This role will be based in our London Office with occasional working from home. It may involve some travel to Sheffield and Bristol on occasions.

Hours: The role could be from 21 hours to 35 hours per week, please let us know what you can offer in your application.

Contract: Six months, to start in May 2020 and end in November 2020.

Salary: London Living Wage (currently £10.75 an hour)

Job Description: 

An exciting opportunity to support the Research Institute, as our Research & Development Intern, working closely with like-minded people to build the profile of the community business movement, that will change the face of the country.

Specifically, this role would suit somebody who wants to gain experience in research and evaluation, as it will involve quantitative data analysis and working on programme evaluations.

Graduates, post-graduates, or those with experience of statistical analysis, or social research in particular, may wish to apply.

We are an independent charitable trust that supports community businesses in England, endowed by the National Lottery Community Fund (previously the Big Lottery Fund). Our vision is better places through community business. We want to back people to build successful community businesses for the benefit of their local places. In addition to offering funding and support directly to the community business sector, we invest heavily in research and impact measurement. Five per cent of our endowment has been allocated to research into the community business sector. This funding supports the activities of our Research Institute.

 

Role Purpose:

To support the work of the research and evaluation function of the Research Institute.

 

Key responsibilities:

Research and evaluation:

• Exploring our quantitative data and answering key questions about community business. This includes data input, cleansing and analysis.

• Supporting the roll-out and maintenance of new and updated grant monitoring processes.

• Desk and online research to review relevant evaluation and programme documentation.

• Proactively disseminating our research outputs and uploading to our website.

• Working with Research Institute colleagues to support the delivery of key research and evaluation outputs.

• Reviewing and ensuring quality and accuracy of research and evaluation reports

• Summarising research and evaluation outputs for newsletters, blogs and summary documents.

• Working with the Head of Impact Evaluation to support the delivery of evaluation projects, including supporting the dissemination of surveys and other ad hoc research related tasks.

 

General: 

• Supporting the organisation and delivery of events.

• Handling calls and queries, booking meetings.

• Other ad hoc work and office support as required

 

Skills & Experience:

• Demonstrable understanding of how to undertake quantitative data analysis, including using appropriate software (e.g. MS Excel, SPSS, R etc)

• Good analytical skills, assimilating and interpreting information from many sources and drawing out cross-cutting themes

• Knowledge of social research methods.

• Knowledge and/or experience of data quality standards, and adhering to best practice with regard to data protection

• IT literate (proficient with MS Office)

• Knowledge of, or interest in, the community business or third sector.

• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, to prioritise multiple activities and competing demands.
