Reports to: Marketing & Communications Director

Hours: Three and a half days a week, 10 am-6 pm, with one hour for lunch, or 24.5 hours spread over the week, by agreement with line manager. The post may require some working outside of these hours, for which time off in lieu will be given.

Job Description: 

We are a membership organisation for leisure-time music groups in the UK. We offer our members practical support and artistic opportunities, celebrate their achievements, speak on their behalf and encourage more people to take part in music. The key priorities of our current 5-year plan are to:

  1. Help our groups become stronger and better able to connect with new members and audiences
  2. Stand up for and celebrate groups, their members, and others coming together to make or present music in their leisure time across the UK
  3. Invite and welcome all kinds of music groups to become part of our community

About the Role:

We are looking for a part-time Marketing and Communications Officer to work with us on promotion, communication, media and income-generation. Are you experienced in digital content and social media? Creative and able to find and write up stories for print, website, email and social media? If you also have great attention to detail, can juggle several tasks at the same time, and would like to find a job where your ideas are appreciated, then we definitely want to hear from you! We are a small team, so we work closely together, but we all also need to be able to work independently and take responsibility for our own area of work.

Job purpose

The Marketing and Communications Officer is one of three roles in the marketing and communications team, responsible for:

  • Contributing to digital content across multi-platform use
  • Creating and scheduling content on social media
  • Contributing to editing and managing website content
  • Working with the team to research and write content for publications
  • Help Marketing & Communications Director with marketing research and admin
  • Work with the Marketing & Communications Director on income generation plans for membership recruitment and retention, corporate membership, instrument insurance, Supporters scheme, and Legacy Giving
  • Attending marketing and other events as necessary


Key responsibilities


  • Contribute to our marketing strategy
  • Report against agreed targets
  • Contribute to market research with line manager, collecting and analysing information, and sharing as required
  • Contribute to internal and external communications strategy, with members internally and externally about our role, the impact of its members, and the importance of leisure-time music-making for communities, including specific campaigning aims
  • Contribute to media/PR strategy


  • Contribute to establishing a strong and distinctive brand for us.
  • Apply brand identity consistently, internally and externally.
  • Help team to research, source or create brand consistent photography and imagery for multi-platform use.


  • Contribute to teamwork on goals, key messages, tone of voice, and appropriate channels for communications.
  • Help with creation and delivery of content across all platforms, e.g. website, social media, etc..
  • Work with team on membership communications.
  • Help with internal communications.


  • Contribute to teamwork on goals, key messages, tone(s) and angle(s) for stories.

Printed Marketing Materials

  • Help design and create marketing materials in print.
  • Support Marketing & Communications Manager with editing of publications including​, Highnotes (magazine 3 times a year), Selected Artists Guide (annual), Annual Report, etc.
  • Help team with writing and editing of copy as required.
  • Support team with desktop publishing, sourcing and editing photography, using InDesign to produce print-ready proofs, proofreading.


  • Contribute to teamwork on goals, target markets and key messages.
  • Work with Marketing & Communications Manager on editing, commissioning and creating digital content for multi-platform use, including monthly email newsletter iNotes, weekly member emails, building, testing, managing data.
  • Keep up to date on new digital opportunities.
  • Help team with editing website and managing website content.
  • Lead on creating and scheduling content for social media, coordinating with rest of team on messaging and priorities.

Income Generation

  • Work with Marketing & Communications Director and membership team on research, recruitment, welcome and retention of members.
  • Ensure corporate membership benefits are delivered.
  • Work with Marketing & Communications Director on promoting instrument insurance.
  • Implement individual fundraising plans, working with Marketing & Communications Director.


  • Act as an ambassador for us and our values at all times.
  • With colleagues, set up and attend marketing events (trade shows, festivals, etc.).
  • Contribute and work with colleagues, Board and volunteers as required.

Person specification

This role is for someone with experience in digital and social media, with creative ideas, with the ability to find and write up stories, and with great attention for detail, bringing these skills to our print publications, website and social media channels.

Essential skills and experience

  • Ability to write well and clearly for different audiences
  • Experience of copywriting (print and digital)
  • Experience of managing social media channels for an organisation
  • Experience of using a website Content Management System (eg Drupal)
  • Experience of using mass-emailing tools (e.g. CiviMail, MailChimp)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Good organisation and time management skills including the ability to keep more than one project going at any one time
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
  • Good research skills

Desirable skills and experience

  • Experience of using InDesign and Adobe Photoshop in a professional capacity
  • Experience of fundraising
  • Experience of digital marketing
  • An understanding of the leisure-time music sector or experience participating in a leisure- time music group
  • Photography/video skills and experience
  • A good visual eye
