Salary and Benefits: 

Salary: £50,500 per annum. The Board will consider applications for flexible working, and job- sharing.

Contract:

  • Fixed term, 12-month contract. Four-month probationary period, after which joint CEO status will be assumed.
  • Annual leave allowance is 20 days per annum, plus Bank Holidays.
  • Staff are auto enrolled into the NEST pension scheme.
  • Notice period is one month during the probationary period (on either side), thereafter 2 months.

Job Description: 

The role of Executive Director & Co-Chief Executive (Maternity Cover)

The organisation, the UK’s largest producing theatre dedicated to children and young people, seeks to appoint a skilled and dedicated Executive Director to work alongside the Artistic Director to lead the theatre for an interim period due to maternity leave. The Executive Director (Maternity Cover) shares responsibility with the Artistic Director for the leadership of the organisation, and as joint CEOs both posts are responsible to the Board of Caryl Jenner Productions Ltd.

The Executive Director (Maternity Cover) appointment takes place at an important and exciting time for the theatre, as it responds to the challenges created by the Covid-19 pandemic and undertakes the planned reopening of the building in 2021. The Executive Director (Maternity Cover) will be instrumental through their support and provocation of the Artistic Director, through dynamic joint leadership of the company and through detailed engagement with the theatre’s important work.

Principal responsibilities working in partnership and close collaboration with the Artistic Director:

Strategic

  • Implement strategy for long-term organisational sustainability, health and resilience.
  • Review the strategic plan regularly in light of its artistic goals, financial objectives, industry trends, the market environment, and performance of the Company.
  • Lead on the recruitment and management of all staff and the organisational structure of the theatre.
  • Develop creative partnerships and co-producers, exploring possibilities with commercial and non-commercial producers, and possibilities for touring.
  • Develop the profile and influence of the organisation by working with the Artistic Director to build a strategy that positions and celebrates the theatre as the UK’s leading professional theatre for young audiences.

Leadership

  • Together with the Artistic Director, provide confident and inspiring leadership that motivates and enthuses staff and visiting artists.
  • Ensure that there is an appropriate management structure in place to enable the organisation to deliver the Business Plan, with appropriately delegated responsibilities staffed by suitably experienced staff.
  • Ensure that staff at all levels in the organisation are effectively managed and supported and that policies and procedures are maintained to ensure consistent and fair treatment of all staff. Create a supportive environment where everyone can give their best.
  • Put diversity, accessibility and the interests of children at the heart of the theatre’s thinking and work.
  • Power the journey towards environmental sustainability goals. Drive behavioural, procedural and material changes to the theatre’s work to maximise reduction of the theatre’s carbon footprint, in line with targets.
  • Ensure appropriate training and development is conducted for management and staff and that for key management positions succession planning is conducted.
  • Create and apply appropriate recruitment, remuneration and reward policies to retain and attract appropriately experienced and skilled people. Oversee the contracting of all staff and freelancers (where appropriate).
  • Oversee the management of the organisation's brand, ensuring the vision and values of the organisation are effectively communicated.
  • Oversee the planning and implementation of a planned new website, due for completion in 2021.
  • Undertake line management responsibilities as appropriate, and to lead regular company meetings.
  • Develop and maintain excellent relations with BECTU, Equity and other trades unions.
  • Attend sharings, Previews, Press and Supporters Nights as required.

Fundraising

  • Establish and maintain high level contact and dialogue with the organisations’s key funders, sponsors, customers, and important external influencers.
  • Provide active leadership for the theatre’s fundraising activities, working with the Development Director to achieve targets in line with the theatre’s strategy and values.
  • Champion, support and participate, where appropriate, in all fundraising activities.
  • Develop and maintain excellent relationships with the theatre’s key supporters.
  • Act as Ambassador for the theatre at all levels. Represent the theatre externally at theatre and arts, business, political and community level ensuring the company’s views and position on key public policy and industry matters are effectively communicated.

Finance

  • Effectively plan, manage, monitor and control the company’s finances ensuring that appropriate systems are in place to safeguard the company, including those aspects of Corporate Governance delegated by the Board.
  • Develop an annual budget covering the theatre’s operations for Board approval.
  • Formulate all budgets for forward income and expenditure, including, as required, long term plans, annual budgets, cashflow forecasts and show and project budgets.
  • Oversee the production of regular management accounts and other financial analyses, ensuring effective oversight and reporting to the Board.

Producing and Artistic Programme

  • With the Artistic Director, plan and schedule the annual programme, ensuring it supports the thetare’s strategic business objectives including onstage and digital productions online.
  • Alongside the Artistic Director, develop current creative partnerships and co-productions.
  • Explore further exploitation including new partnerships with other theatre companies and commercial and non-commercial producers and seek possibilities for touring.
  • Oversee (with the Artistic Director and Producing Team) the negotiation of rights, licences, royalties and contracts for Organisation productions.
  • Negotiate the financial framework for the visiting company programme at the Organisation.
  • Work with the Production & Technical Director to ensure productions are realised in accordance with the artistic vision and budgets.

 

Reporting/Communication

  • Advocating and promoting the company’s profile and programme to underpin the artistic and strategic vision.
  • Ensure that appropriate reporting and communication systems are established across the company for both internal and external purposes, including leading on reporting to Arts Council England.
  • Ensure the Company’s planning processes provide for accurate and timely compilation of communication material.
  • Ensure effective information flows to the relevant departments including the Board.

Operations

  • To oversee responsibility for Health & Safety (with the Production & Technical Director) within the Theatre by ensuring that procedures are in place to provide for health, safety and welfare affairs to be adequately assigned, resourced and researched and to ensure that accountability is understood and accepted at all appropriate levels.
  • Develop the company’s activities with the aim of maximising income generation. Ensure that the experience of our customers is enhanced by the reception they receive in our theatre and maximise the commercial opportunities available to us from the use of our building, including in-house catering, the shop and corporate hires.
  • Ensure compliance with all laws and regulations, including reporting to Companies House and the Charity Commission.
  • Ensure that the theatre has appropriate and fully developed policies, matching the theatre’s needs.

 

This list of responsibilities is not exhaustive, and the Executive Director may be required to perform duties outside of this as operationally required and at the discretion of the Board.

 

Person Specification

Essential qualities, skills and experience:

  • Demonstrable experience in a leadership role within an arts organisation for a minimum of five years
  • Experience of producing professional theatre projects on a variety of scales
  • Proven experience of negotiating complex contracts
  • Experience of fundraising
  • The ability to realise an inspirational artistic vision for the theatre
  • Experience of managing significant budgets and financial systems
  • Experience of managing diverse groups of people with commitment to HR best practice
  • An understanding of children’s theatre and the mission of the organisation
  • A keen awareness of the social, cultural and financial context within which the theatre operates
  • A genuine and demonstrable commitment to maintaining the broadening of cultural diversity and access across all areas of the organisation's work
  • The ability to inspire and motivate stakeholders and staff
  • Experience of reporting to a Board
  • A confident public speaker who is comfortable representing the theatre on a variety of platforms.
  • A network of contacts in the theatre sector is desirable
