Conservation Technician, Workshop and Sculpture & Installation

We are looking for an enthusiastic, practical Conservation Technician to join our Workshop and Sculpture & Installation Conservation teams to work flexibly to support all areas of our organisation’s Exhibitions & Displays, Loans and Acquisitions Programmes.

About us:

The conservation teams are two of five teams within the Conservation department at our organisation forming part of the wider Collections Care division, comprising of Library and Archives and Collections Management. The Division works across all our sites.

Key responsibilities:

Day-to-day, you will be;

  • Providing technical support for the conservation
  • Assisting with casing and packing,
  • Preservation and use of works of art in our organisation’s Collections
  • Supporting all related programme activity 
  • Care for, handle, case/pack, prepare and maintain artworks and their associated components for safe storage, transit, installation and display.

Person Specification:

The post requires a range of knowledge of materials such as wood, metals, stone, textiles, organics, modern materials, plastics, foodstuffs, ceramic, glass, mechanisms and moving parts, preventive conservation and packing of artworks.

  • You will hold a recognised City & Guilds qualification in carpentry and joinery or cabinet making or equivalent 
  • Have demonstrable practical experience with a broad range of developed craft skills including carpentry, metalworking and machine maintenance.
  • Have good problem-solving skills and to be an effective communicator.
  • You will need to accurately provide time estimates for activities undertaken
  • Work as part of a team under supervision and independently on a broad range of conservation activities
  • Provide specialist technical assistance and advice for the artworks in our organisation’s Collection and Care.

The role is based in Southwark, London but travel between all our organisation's sites is often required and there is the opportunity to undertake training in order to work across the UK and internationally, enabling the sharing of our organisation’s collections.
